Honey Storage and Use
How do I store honey?
Don't let your precious honey go to waste! Follow these guidelines to have a long-lasting sweet experience:
- Store honey at room temperature and DO NOT refrigerate it as that will make it crytalize faster.
- Keep out of direct sunlight.
- Always close the lid securely.
Can I substitute sugar for honey?
Honey is basically life's fat free sugar! 2-3 times a day is more than enough
Up to one cup of sugar can be substituted with equivalent amounts of honey. For every cup of honey used, reduce the liquid by 1/4 cup.
For every cup of honey used in baked goods, add 1/2 teaspoon baking soda and bake at a temperature 25 degrees lower than recommended. Increase the flour by two teaspoons per cup of honey or enough flour to achieve the appropriate consistency in cookie recipes that ask for eggs but no additional liquid. Before shaping and baking, chill the dough.
Use the same cup that you used to measure the oil in the recipe to measure the honey, or cover a cup or spoon with nonstick veggie spray.
Why can't I feed honey to babies under one year of age?
When honey is taken before the age of one, there is a risk of newborn botulism, an extremely serious condition that affects the nerve system. Clostridium botulinum bacterial spores may be found in honey and other raw agricultural products. These spores can be found in abundance in nature. They're present in soil, dust, the air, and unprocessed agricultural goods. C. botulinum spores can germinate, develop, and create toxin in the lower colon of some newborns under the age of one year after consumption. This occurs because the gut microbiota of newborns is still developing. Children and adults with a healthy gut microbiota can safely consume C. botulinum spores.
Honey should not be fed to newborns under the age of one year, according to the National Honey Board and other health groups.
